I was overhyped on FFVI

I only ever played the gba version. I finished it when I was younger but I tried replaying it as an adult. There are lots of comments saying it's the best 2d rpg along with Chrono Trigger. FFVI has a great battle system. It's simple and fast. The art is also awesome. The magic system is definitely odd and made characters identical. However, the story is depressing. I mean the beginning was sad, the middle was sad, the ending? yeah also sad.. It's a tragedy all around. I dont understand why people even like Kefka. The guy looks like he's having a more fun time than me. My party is so serious. I guess I am still not old enough to appreciate this tragic story. I guess it's just that I thought that ff6 is THE 2D jrpg to play if I only have one jrpg to play. But it's not. JRPG to me is a fun adventure. FFVI is a tragic painful game to play. What would be the 2D JRPG you would have if you can only have one?
